RGD

Walcheren, 1971. Scale 1:50,000. Covers the west end of Walcheren Island in the SW including Vlissingen and Middelburg, an entirely Holocene landscape. Folded colour print, 57.5x73cm (22.5"x29"), Dutch and English legend. Substantial notes in right margin are in Dutch only. In good condition.

2

RGD

General Geological Map of the Netherlands, 1975. Scale 1:600,000. Folded colour print, 63x65.5cm (25"x26"), part of set that also includes same size and scale of Applied geology, of b/w print of shallow faults, contours of top of marine Pleistocene, and sheet of geological sections in green folder. This set is in very good condition but is marred by the use of a black marker pen crossing out library stamps, mostly marginal but some in map area showing through from back and is therefore reduced. Does not affect legibility but spoils appearance.

RGD

Sheet 39 East, 1982. Not titled but covers Wageningen on the Rhine where it is only 4km from the R.Waal. Folded colour print, 77x68.5cm (30"x27"), part of set that also includes Applied Geology, Top of the Sand (below fluvial clay), Age of Holocene Stream Belts, and 3 sheets of sections. Incredibly detailed. Legends in Dutch and English. In very good condition.

Rijks Geologische Dienst - Netherlands Geological Survey

First series 1:50,000 geological maps each cover a relatively small area, considering the scale, of 13x20km approximately. The map sheets are 42.5x52cm and the actual map area is only 26x41cm with a section below the map. The index map of the sheet layout shows all maps are quarters of a numbered larger rectangle: I is NW; II is NE, III is SW and IV is SE. The small map size together with the bright colouring makes these maps very attractive for framing. As the sheets cover small areas and the sheet lines cut across many cities, so more than one may be required; if more than 3 or more are purchased, a 10% discount applies to this series.

These maps are in very good condition with only a pencil note of a library location in the upper left corner, unless otherwise noted. All are from the first half of the 20th century on older base maps. Adjacent areas of Germany and Belgium, while not coloured geologically, have full topographic detail in black or grey outline.

The detail is incredible for those used to mapping the Holocene and Pleistocene in at most 2 or 3 colours; the topographic detail is very fine as well. In marine areas, off-shore contours at 5m intervals are given for northern coastal waters, but not for Ijselmeer / Zuiderzee or the river outlets of the south.

For the geologist, the use of colours such as bright red, which conventionally depicts granitic bedrock in other countries, seems at first strange. But for Dutch geologists there are not enough colours in the conventional geological legend to map the many distinctions they make in Recent deposits.
