Engraved, colour wash in soft pastel colours, prior to standardization of colours for geology. 14"18", actual map area 11"x14". In very good condition: flat, clear plate mark, original centre-fold, very slight browning to edges, library stamp in upper right margin, slightly into border.

Geological Map of Europe, 1888. Scale 1:10,000,000. Colour print, 48x60cm, on folded linen-backed paper. In brown book style folder (17x10.5cm) with gold lettering on front board, slight bumping to corners. Prestwich's sources are printed on the back end paper of the cover. Although clearly issued separately, a marginal note states' Prestwich's Geology, vol II, Clarendon'. A bright clean copy in very good condition.

Geological Map of Europe, 1888. Scale 1:10,000,000. A second Colour print, 48x60cm, on folded linen-backed paper. Not in folder, but with Oxford U Press label on reverse. Worn on folds so that paper has lifted from linen with limited loss. A careful repair will greatly improve this bright clean copy in fair condition.

Geological Map of Europe, the Geographical Press, Columbia University, 1942. Scale 1:5,000,000. Brown and black print, 61x100cm. Extensive notes with regional cross-sections on the reverse side. Also on the back a reduced size copy of Lobek's Physiographic Map of Europe, which was also published separately, at the same size as this map. A very instructive, detailed and useful map for university students for 3 decades, it surprisingly shows only one entry on Google. Tears on intersections of folds, otherwise light wear on folds, clean and in fair to good condition.

Murchison, Nicol

Geological Map of Europe; Exhibiting the Different Systems of Rocks, by Murchison, Sir Roderick I. and Nicol, James, 1856. Publ. AK Johnston, 1st edition. Scale 1”=76miles. Colour print, 42”x51”, cut and mounted on linen to fold. Folding to 10.5”x8.5”. One of board covers missing, the other is green cloth covered and very worn. Linen worn at intersection of folds and some curling of panel corners at central fold intersections. Original green ribbon edging perished at folds. Map colours are clean and bright - an early masterpiece of the colour printing of geological maps. Light age toning in white areas, darker where in contact with ribbon edging. The map extends to east to include the Urals, south to include the Mediterranean coast of Africa and the Near East (now Middle East) and northwestwards to include Iceland. Very detailed for the scale and ambitious in its coverage. The map is in good to very good condition.
