British Isles non-survey - England & Wales

GW Bacon and Co, the Strand, London published various atlas editions from the 1870s to the 1910s which included a Geological Map of England and Wales on two double page sheets – north and south. These maps are generally found loose and sometimes joined. While the maps are not dated themselves, developments in content and layout enable a distinction between early and late versions within this date range. All have different page numbers, indicating publication in different atlases (a minor avenue for future research). Early maps are in the exact cartographic style of the later maps which bear the name and address of Bacon; they have no title block and are not coloured as well as the later versions. Neither do they record the Ordovician.

Light brown staining at some fold intersections due to past damp penetration, otherwise clean, colours bright. In good condition. Arrowsmith, Greenough

Another copy - Arrowsmith's map of 1835. This map is complete but in poor condition. It is linen-canvas backed and mounted on two mahogany rollers with brass-plated finials. It has spent the last several decades rolled up from each end to the middles so that it has flexed and the paper has separated along the original centrefold. The map requires restoration – flattening, light cleaning, repair of centre fold and pasting down of tears. The colour is good and it can be brought up to good condition. It is on my 'to do' list, but in the meantime it is for sale with all faults.

Arrowsmith, Greenough

SOLD

The Inland Navigation, Rail Roads, Geology and Minerals of England and Wales, 1834 (date on map). Hand coloured engraving, 25.5"x21.75" (63x55cm), based on Greenough's map. Slight overall browning with age, minor marginal tears not affecting the map area. Centrefold from original atlas. Trimmed top and bottom close to plate mark, leaving untrimmed index tabs in top and bottom right hand corners. Light tea stain on right margin and two small ink marks in bottom margin. The original colouring is from before the adoption of the now conventional colours, giving a light and unusual look. The legend gives 'scientific', ie, material, names and popular names. In good condition and very attractive.
