Horizontal Sections, England & Wales

The Old Series Geological Maps did not have sections included in the bottom margin as did the later New Series. The sections were engraved at a scale of 1:10,560 or six inches to the mile without vertical exaggeration and hand coloured. A heavy cartridge paper was used that would not distort with the water colour. The sections were issued on separate folio size sheets, approx 27 x 40 inches with typically 6 sections per sheet. In mountainous areas or where there was depth information from mines, the sections would be wider and there could be two or three per sheet. The lines of section were not confined to individual sheets, but in following the strike or to better define a feature the sections would often cross two or more sheets. The Old Series map numbers that a section includes are given in the description. The sheets are flat cartridge paper unless otherwise noted in the conditions. On the index map showing the location of the sections, some very long section lines are shown with occasional small tick marks which show divisions of the section line onto more than one sheet.

Report on a Survey of the Mining District of Cornwall from Chasewater to Camborne, 1819. Includes two folding out hand-coloured sections, each 36.5"x10.5". The first showing a panoramic view of the landscape, geologically coloured and showing mine shaft depths below the landscape; the second 'geological sections shewing the inclinations of the lodes and elvan sources. The sections were worn along the folds and have been professionally restored. The second section has a slight loss of the paper surface affecting a limited area of the bottom border and part of one section. Adverts include Wm. Smith's geological map of England and Wales and several sections. 77pp + adverts 3pp in new black half-leather binding with marbled paper-covered boards.
